JCPenney's Sales Growth; Grocery Ambitions; Kohl's New Initiative

Some Highs and Some Lows: JCPenney reported on Friday that Q4 comparable sales increased 2.6%, and 0.1% for the full 2017 year. That same day, the retailer announced it had cut roughly 360 jobs at its headquarters and stores. "As the company continues to make progress on its strategic framework and implement new processes and organizational efficiencies, it is imperative that we maintain a thoughtful approach to managing expenses, while effectively supporting the needs of the business," Marvin R. Ellison, chairman and CEO of JCPenney, said in a statement.

Fresh Delivery: Sam's Club has teamed up with Instacart to offer same-day delivery. Currently, the service is available in Austin, Texas; Dallas-Fort Worth and St. Louis. The company has plans to expand its service to other areas throughout the US later this year. According to eMarketer's Retail Database, Sam's Clubs' comparable sales increased 3.0% in its last fiscal quarter. 

Grab a Jacket and an Avocado: Kohl's is bringing grocer Aldi into several of its stores this year as the company looks to "scale down its real estate footprint and leverage space for others," CNBC reports. In addition to teaming up with Aldi, the retailer is also reportedly looking to partner with fitness centers.
